  1. The Famine
    In 1847 the great famine began in Ireland. There was a very wet season and all the crops rotted away to dust. If any of the people had corn they had to sell it to pay the rent. The famine left without money or food and many of the people died from hunger. The Government put up a porridge house at Castleshane and the people carried the porridge away in can's and they made it last as long
