On May Eve in the district of Carrickmacross each household goes out into the fields after sunset and gathers armfulls of bright flowers known as May flowers. These they strew at the entrance gate to every field and on every path leading to their homes. If you ask the people why they do this they will tell you that by doing this that all ill luck will be kept away from them and that it will bring good fortune.
