It happened that a Kerryman once possessed a horse that was a noted jumper.

    2. It happened that a Kerryman once possessed a horse that was a noted jumper. At the same time a Limerickman had a horse that was also well able to jump. A contest was arranged to find out which was the better jumper, as, on the appointed day, they met on Kerry-Limerick border. A large concourse of people assembled, among them Owen Ruad.
Both horses jumped equally well over some hedges and fences. The Kerryman set his horse at a high stone wall and got over safely. The Limerickman tried it and his horse jumped it also.
Then Owen Ruad lay flat on top of the wall and persuaded the Kerryman to jump over him. He did so amid the cheers of the Kerry people present, and Owen sat up cheering too.
"Stay as you were", said the Limerickman, "and let me try".
"Oh! no", said Owen, "get a county-man of your own to lie there."
The Limerickman could get nobody there from his own county to do this, so the Kerry horse won.
