    Denny. He owned thirteen thousand acres of land. He was not such a cruel landlord as others. He got possession of the lands of this place from the English, because he belonged to an English family. Tithes were collected not in money but in kind. Some poor people were not able to pay them in kind and therefore evictions took place. The bailiffs and police came and drove the people out of their homes and burned their houses to the ground. The neighbours used to gather around the homes of the evicted people, and try to hunt the bailiffs away, but the bailiff nearly always got the best of them.
