  1. Long ago schools were held in the open air in fine weather, and in the farmers' houses in the wet weather. There was a school in Kilnaghtin taught by one Mr. O'Connor, and one in Tarmons in Mary Moore's house taught by Mr. Moriarty. Every scholar had to pay the master his own fee as the Government had no schools or school teachers in those times. That is why so many of our fore-fathers were illiterate. In those times they had to write with quills because no pens were in use and they had to write on slates with pencils which were got in the quarries.
