  1. Long ago on the 15th August in the year 1893 seventeen people were drowned in the river Shannon coming from Kilkee to Saleen Quay.
    They were going to go to Ballybunion but instead they went to Kilkee as it was more fashionable to go to Kilkee in those days.
    The owner of the boat was a poor man named Maurice Murphy.
    The way he had of making money was taking people out in his boat.
    This was the only day he almost had for making money.
    He and his son took fifteen passengers across to Kilkee and as they were going across the boat began to leak.
