My father sets about an acre of potatoes every year.

My father sets about an acre of potatoes every year.
He sets them in ridges and in drills.
For the ridges he turns the sods with a spade.
Then he draws out the manure with a horse and cart.
He gets a couple of men and they all spread the manure on the ridges.
Then a woman cuts the seed.
She must be sure that there is an eye in each piece.
Then he puts down the seed in the manure in three rows.
He keeps them from ten to fourteen inches apart.
He ploughs between the ridges and shovels up the earth.
