    than there are now and people point out the sites of houses now in ruins where families were reared long ago. The blight burnt away all the stalks and the potatoes were not then ripe. Any potatoes that were put in heaps decayed in the ground. The Government gave seed potatoes the following year and they sowed them broadcast the grain.
