  1. Potatoes are grown on all farms in Leitrim but just enough for household purposes. Each farmer grows roughly about one English acre. This amount varies, sometimes more, sometimes less. The farmer prepares the ground. The potatoes are usually grown in lea. First the farmer mows all rough grass and rushes off the field, next he spreads the manure in ridges. He puts down a scoring rope to guide him so that his ridges will all be straight. His ridge will be about fifteen inches wide. He now cuts his seed. The nice
