  1. Bread was made from wheat and oats. They were grown locally. Flour was not made in the district. Querns were used long ago.
    Potato cake was made long ago and is made at the present time. The potatoes were boiled and then mashed. The potatoes were mixed with flour and rolled into a round ball and then rolled out flat with a rolling pin and cut in a triangular shape and baked in an oven.
    Boxty was made from raw potatoes. It was mixed with flour and a wee grain of salt and then baked on a frying pan.
    Oat meal bread was made from oat meal, milk and water were added.
    Bread was not made every day as enough for a week was made at one time. When cakes was made a square was cut on top of it.
    The bread was baked in a vessel called a pot oven.
    Bread was in baked in front of the fire. The support was called a stand. It was made of iron. Griddle bread was made also.
