It has been said that Benbo is "twice richer than all the rest of Ireland". This saying had its origins in the belief that the mountain contained a gold mine. It was also said that in the small lake at the top of the mountain a great treasure lies hidden. The lake is said to be enchanted and the treasure guarded by a cat. Copper was mined at Shanvas on the Northern slope of Benbo not so many years ago, and the supposed gold mine is said to run eastward from this point at a great depth.
The herds minding sheep on the mountain were called Lords Benbo.
