    How they totter now in the fitful gleam

    And the rugged peaks of Knocknaree
    Show bright their giant forms
    Round the Cairn lone that marks where Maeve
    Lies' tombed amid the storms
    E'en the inky pall o'er the waterfall
    That forms in wild Glencar
    Is rent tonight by shafts of light
    Sent quivering from afar.
    Oh what portends this sheeted flame
    That reddens field and wave?
    Doth it speak of hope for Innisfail
    Doth it rouse the pining slave?
    Is Eoghan come down from his northern hills
    To smite the savage horde
