    There was a man long ago, himself and his wife and son who lived in a cottage...

    There was a man long ago, Himself and his wife and son who lived in a cottage; they were very happy but they had one trouble in their minds. There was a big fairy thorn growing right in the middle of the little field at the west side of the cottage and people used to be dancing, singing, and shouting under the big bush, until cock-crow sometimes and 'twas often they took it into their heads to cut down the fairy thorn to the roots. At last Pat cut it to the roots as he was going to plough up the little field to put spuds in it and the big bush was after spreading out so far at that time. When Jim, his son, was fifteen years a thing happened to poor Pat. One night 'twas May Eve Pat and Jim and the neighbouring boys were coming home from a wake. Just as they were
