It is an old custom to light a candle on Saturday in honour of the Blessed Virgin.
On New Year's day the country people put Holy Water, salt and a grain of oats into a potato and put it on top of the roof for a successful crop. It is also an old country custom to turn a piece of soil on on the first of February if the ground is too hard to plough.
