  1. Once upon a time there was a protestant girl married to a catholic boy and when they were married for five years his wife died. In the same town there dwelled a priest who was taking a walk he happened to meet a friend belonging to the catholic boy and the priest addressing him said "Do you know that your friend's wife is in hell." The boy looked at him and said nothing.
The priest and the boy walked on until they came to a little lane and both parted. The boy walked on up the lane till he came to his friend's house. He went in and the other fellow was very glad to see him. As his friend say down he said to the catholic boy "Do you know what the priest told me?" and the other fellow said "what" "That your wife is in hell." "Well" said the other fellow "I'll make him prove it". He ran out of the house down the lane until he came up with the priest. "Come back father, come back" said the boy.
The priest came back to the boy's house and went to the room where the man's wife died. He prayed for five minutes and said "If you are there be here." The priest prayed again and said 'If you are there be here." and he prayed a third time and said "If you are there be here." Immediately the woman came up through the grate.
"Where were you the first time that I called you?"
"I was in the lowest pits of hell."
