    the death of a person and to give the last rites of the church. It was during these times that “offerings” were made to the priest, to assist him to live and the “offerings” customs which is in existence at present started in the Penal Days.

  2. Long ago when the Penal laws were in force in Ireland there were no churches built in which the priests could say Mass. The priests to say Mass in houses, old sheds and behind hedges.
    There was an old shed in the townland of Aughadren near Laghey, Co Donegal in which Mass was said by a priest named Fr. O’Donnell. He stayed for three nights in the home of my great grandfather, John Connolly. This old shed was known for long afterwards as “the Mass Shed.”
