    people make short ropes out of horse hair the same way still.
    Candle-making
    Old people long ago used to cut the very largest of the rushes and hang them up on the chimney to dry and season.
    Then after a while they peeled the greatest portion of them except a few inches at the bottom to stick it into a turnip or a potato and when they would be seasoned they would dip them in fat.
    They were used chiefly for hob-light and they called them Padóig. When they would have them dipped they should hang them very high up the chimney or the cats would eat them all.
