- The people in this district begin to wear boots before they are a year old. Most of the children go barefooted in Summer. The water used for washing feet is thrown out at night. It is supposed that the fairies will enter any house in which the feet water is kept overnight and that if it is thrown near the door, the devil will sit on the doorstep for the remainder of the night.
There are no boots made locally, but the people mend their own boots when they break. Mr. Michael Forde of Spancilhill used to make boots, and Mr. Michael Mahony of no fixed abode used also make and mend boots. Mr. John Kinglsey used to mend boots. The cause of their being no shoemakers in the district is due to so many boot factories having sprung up.
Clogs were fairly common in this locality some time ago, but they are uncommon nowadays
