The Potato CropAbout an acre and a half are sown under potatoes in my father's farm. The amount seldom varies.
My father prepares the ground each year. The ground is manured each year before the sowing of the potatoes. Farm yard manure is mostly used. Wooden ploughs were used in former times, but they are not used in this district now.
The potatoes are cut into two or three pieces each called a sgiolcháin, before being sowed and an eye or two is left on each piece. Manure is spread along the furrow and the potatoes are placed about a foot apart on the manure. The drills are split with a plough out on the furrow. The potatoes are "pinched" at the sowing. This is done by taking away some of the earth from the drill with a spade. They are sprayed three times during the Summer and when the stalks are a good size they are landed by putting earth around the stalks, by means(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
