- About an acre and a half of potatoes are grown on our farm. We usually sow about the same amount every year.The ground is prepared for this crop by my father and a farm labourer. We do not manure the ground before ploughing it. We sow the potatoes in drills. First the ground is ploughed and harrowed then it is ploughed again by a double mold board plough which forms the drills.Long ago wooden ploughs were used, but there are none used now. My father remembers seeing one in some one elses field.The spades are bought in shops. The potatoes are wed and sprayed during the summer months. They are put in pits. When they are picked they are heaped up and covered with rushes and soil. "Kerr's Pinks" grow best on our farm. Long ago people used potatoes instead of starch.
