- The total amount of land sown under potatoes each year is an acre. My father and my uncle prepares the ground; it is done in this way; first they plough the land, with a plough and a pair of horses, then harrow it, with a harrow and a horse, then drill it, with a plough, then manure it with farm-yard manure. Lastly, they drop the poatatoes and close the drills.
Sometimes they are sown in ridges; the work is then done with a spade.
Long ago wooden ploughs were used. The spades that are used locally are bought.
The poataoes are dug in Autumn, with spades, ploughs, or potato diggers.
First they pick the good ones, then the small ones.
The good potatoes are stored in pits, the small ones are brought home and put into the shed.
These are the classes of potatoes that are grown in our district, Aran-banners, Champions, Great Scotts, Eppicures, Cerrpinks, Golden Wanderers, Aran-Victors, Scerry[?] blues,(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
