When a first primrose or daisy appears in the early Spring, it is not right to pull it and bring it into the house. If it is brought in, small flocks of chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys will be the rule in that house the whole year.
It is counted very unlucky to bring in white thorn to the house.
It is unlucky to bring Holly to the house until Christmas time.
It is unlucky to strike bird, beast or man with a holly stick. (holly)
If haws are plentiful expect a good season!
" A Haw year is a breaghyear" is an old saying
" A Sloe year is a woe year" is an old saying
If the cuckoo sings on a bare haw thorn bush expect a bad season, and bad crops.
A lone white thorn or black thorn must never be touched. A flower or blossom must not be plucked off it. There is a lone hawthorn just beside the school and over a well. The smallest chid in Tiercahan school would not touch a branch. They all know its unlucky.
- When the cuckoo is first heard each person looks under his shoe (left one) to see if a hair is there. If there is, he will be alive that time next year.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
