The local forges are Paddy Foley's
William Byrne's, Stephen Fitzpatricks and Tom Murphy's.
Foley's forge is supposed to be working since
1507. Byrnes forge is situated in Coolcullen.
It is supposed to be there for six generations.
The work carried out out in this forge is shoeing horses
and asses. The Byrne's are also good men at curing
any ailments with horses legs and feet. This forge
is situated by the road side. There is no chimney
but a hole in the gable end and roof to let
the smoke out. There is a horse shoe on the
door which is supposed to be the first the smith
made. Their tools consist of a hammer, pincers,
sledge, bellows and anvil. The bellows that William
Byrne has was made by Bob Rickaby a local
tradesman. There is a tradition that when
Our Lord was been crucified they went to get
nails made by a smith but he refused and
a tinker made them and Our Lord said
that everyone would have to go to the smiths(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
