- Old HousesThe houses in olden times were built of rough stones mixed with wet mud for cement. When the mud dried it stuck the stones together.The roofs were thatched with straw and scollops.All the old houses had a bed in the kitchen. It was called a "Settle Bed". It could be closed in and acted as a seat. The fireplace was nearly always in the gable wall. The front of the chimney was plastered with red clay wetted and made fine.The floors of the houses were made of red clay and sand.
