    It was his boast that "anything from a needle to an anchor could be got in his shop". A stranger in the village visited that shop and asked for a pennyworth of Rosan Snobs and was instantly supplied with them
    Then followed the home made candles. A mould was procured for making candles at home. It was shaped like the outer casing of a bicycle pump one end open and the other tapering and perforated at the point. Through the centre of this cylinder a cotton thread was passed held at the open end by a nail passed through a loop in the thread and projecting at the other end through the taper point. Liquid tallow was then poured into the mould through the open end. It did not flow out at the tapered end for the thread almost completely closed the opening there. The filled mould was then put by. When the tallow cooled it was drawn out by means of the nail above referred to and so the candle was made. It was a dull colour
