- Oaten bread was made in the District in olden times, also potato cake, boxty and wheaten bread.
The read was made from wheat. Wheat was grown and the flour was made locally.
Water was added to make oaten bread, and milk was used to make other sorts of bread.
Bread was baked every day. There were marks put on a cake.
Oaten bead was baked standing before the fire and its support was called a stand. The stand was made of iron.
Griddle bread is made even to this day. My mother uses a griddle to make bread sometimes.
There are two handles attached to it.
There were different kinds of bread made on different occasions such as pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, cake made on water for Good Friday, current cakes were made at Christmas, boxty was made on Hallow eve.
