    famous school of St. Enda, Áran na Naomh, he asked his mother to allow him to take with him his favourite cow. She refused and Ciaran went to the monastery without her. One day when out in the monastery garden he saw the cow, she had followed him all the way and she supplied the monastery with milk for a long time. The story says that when she died, her hide was made into parchment. This was made into a book called "The Book of the Dun Cow".
    It is also said that when St. Ciaran was in Hare Island he dropped his Book of Gospels into Lough Ree. He was greatly distressed, but a fish came up and left the book on the land perfectly intact.
