  1. St Ciaran is traditionally connected with the district. The seven churches of Clonmacnoise, now in ruins, were built by him. He is buried there too in St. Ciaran's bed, and every coffin, going into this graveyard, is placed first in St. Ciaran's bed. Several people in the locality are called after him, and there is a Terrace called after him. In St. Mary's Church, a stained glass window depicts St. Kieran and King Diarmuid digging the soil to lay the first stone of the great monastery.
