  1. A famine ravaged this country in the year 1847. The chief food of the people was the potato, but they failed.
The people died of hunger in fields and on roads.
Then there were soup kitchens established in many districts to give meals to the poor people who were hungry. Then a fever broke out and went from north to south of Ireland. Great numbers of people died and in many places the whole family died. Fully one fourth of the people died in Ireland from the famine. It lasted for two years.
