- In the mythology of most European countries the dog fiend is representated as lying wait for departed souls. According to the Aryan religion the sould of the dead are supposed to ride on the night wind then howling dogs gathering into their throng the souls of the dying as they pass by their houses. In the North, those are called "Gabriel Hounds" and then yelping can be heard for miles around though they are generally invisible. Even in lthe present enlightened age in this district the howling of a dog near the house of a sick person is looked upon as an omen of death and is not at all liked by the occupants of the house, feeling that it portends danger.
