In the days of the Land League and in later years Ceanannus Mor was an important centre of activities and was the scene of many public meetings which were addressed by well known orators including the late Charles Stewart Parnell; who made probably his last public speech from a plat form erected in Castle St, the square and adjoining streets being thronged with enthusiastic supports of his cause.
At the Meath Feis in 1905 the opening address was given by Dr. Dougles Hyde (now President elect of Eire) In 1918 the first meeting in support of Liam Mellowes, the Sinn Fein candidate selected for North Meath was addressed by the late Harry Boland and Seán T O'Kelly, each of whom was introduced under an assumed name as they were wanted by the British and liable to arrest. Various other prominent Irishmen addressed meetings here amongst whom were - Eamonn De Velera, Kevin O Higgins, Dr. Mc Cartan, Laurence Ginnell
