  1. The great flood which occurred in the branch of the Mulcair river, which flows through Newport, on August 12th 1912, was an event which cannot be omitted from local history, owing to the thrill and the panic which it caused while it lasted and the many changes, geographical and otherwise which were also the result.
    It is most interesting and amusing to hear people of the district, who were grown up at the time, describe the flood - the untimely warning of its coming, and its after effects, when it had passed over. To listen to the whole story from beginning to end fom the lips of a good local story teller, by the turf fire, on a wintery night, would be time well spent, especially if one could imagine herself a fully grown person at the time, and get a mental image of the awe inspiring details in connection with the great deluge.
