1. Tales of Buried Treasure

   On the Gason estate at Richmond near Nenagh in a field called Broder which is situated between the avenue gate and the group of cottages recently built and ajoining the public road tradition states there was once a monastery. This monastery was supposed to stand in the corner next the avenue gate and ajacent to the road. The monks that occupied it or the period of its existance is not known. But the story is told that the monks were threatened with death and extermination and their monastery with destruction and were forced to flee in a great hurry. They thought upon a plan to save the Sacred vessel's and treasures. These they enclosed in (a) large lumps of tallow and left them in an exposed dump with other lumber. Abandoning the monastery it fell into the occupation of the enemy and suffered some destruction in their hands but one of the monk's disguised and pretending to be what we now call a peddler succeded in purchasing the tallow and other lumber and thus saving (a) the monastic treasure's. Later they returned to the monastery and for a time carried on as before. Again danger threatened and they were forced to flee and it is said that not wishing to try the same plan twice a couple of the monks
