“The story of the treasure may be founded on the fact that when the Abbey was attacked by the British, some of the monks were murdered, but some escaped. and succeeded in securing the sacred vessels and other valuables...”

In the shadow of the Galtees
Stands an Abbey ruin old
And like many in our island
Sad tale of it is told.
How oft before its altar rose
The holy word of God
And oft upon the sacred floor
The holy brethren trod
There the days were spent in teaching,
Spreading knowledge thro’ the land
There the widow and the orphan
Were fed with generous hand
Its fame was known o’er road and plain
And by the rippling rills
In cottage and in mansion too
Along the Galtee hills.II
For centuries the holy monks
In heavenly peace did dwell
But soon there came a day of woe
For them a tale to tell;
When Sydney – man of evil deeds
Whose crimes were nothing less
Than those of his lynx-eyed mistress
Oft called the “Good Queen Bess”,
Attacked the sacred edifice(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
