    In the shadow of the Galtees
    Stands an Abbey ruin old
    And like many in our island
    Sad tale of it is told.
    How oft before its altar rose
    The holy word of God
    And oft upon the sacred floor
    The holy brethren trod
    There the days were spent in teaching,
    Spreading knowledge thro’ the land
    There the widow and the orphan
    Were fed with generous hand
    Its fame was known o’er road and plain
    And by the rippling rills
    In cottage and in mansion too
    Along the Galtee hills.

    For centuries the holy monks
    In heavenly peace did dwell
    But soon there came a day of woe
    For them a tale to tell;
    When Sydney – man of evil deeds
    Whose crimes were nothing less
    Than those of his lynx-eyed mistress
    Oft called the “Good Queen Bess”,
    Attacked the sacred edifice
