  1. In a certain family there was a boy who was very big and strong, but who never left the cradle. He had to be fed in the cradle every day. His father and mother were always grumbling and thought that he should get up and help them with their farm work. He listened quietly to see all their talk and grumbling, and one day he said that he would go out into the world and earn his own living if he got a fortune. They refused to give him any money, so in order not to be hungry on the way, he took with him a cake which was on the griddle and a flail which he found in the loft.
    He walked and walked and at last he got tired and hungry. He called into a farmer's house and asked the owner if he wanted any servant boy. The farmer said that he did not as he had enough of help to do his work, but that he knew a man who was looking for a boy and that if he said he, himself, sent him, he would surely keep him. "How will he know that am telling the truth" said the boy. "Well," said the farmer:- "Take my penknife and show it to him and then he will believe you." The farmer gave him his penknife and off he went to the farmer's
