Clogs were worn to a small extent, but they had to be bought in the city of Limerick. Nailed boots with strong leather uppers are the popular foot-wear for all when working at home. Light fancy shoes are worn on Sundays for going to dances for travelling, and other important occasions. Leather wsa never made in the district.

  2. The local Forge
There are two forges in the parish. Clifford is the name of the smith in Ballyhahill village. He is a stranger who has come in here from Kerry. The forge is near the Atha Ban river. There is an advantage in this, for ironing wheels that is putting iron bands on to the wooden framework.
The forge is a small building with cement in the walls and a timber roof. In it are to be seen a bellows, anvil, hammers, sledges, and a vice. The chief work the smith has to do is to shoe horses and asses and put iron bands on wheels. The smith is a man of ordinary strength. A wet day is a popular day for the forge.
