- Some Lord Kingston conceived the idea of a silk industry in the vicinity of Mitchelstown. In the two fields between the road at Brigown and the raised walk leading to St. Fanahan's Well he had mulberry trees planted. (some specimens still survive) and he imported a certain number of silkworms. The climate, however, being unsuited, the worms died and the project failed. Its memory is still preserved in the local place name Mulberry Lane.
