  1. Caoining at wakes is an old custom which is still carried on in some of the Gaedhealtacht districts of the west of Ireland. Certain women come to the corpse house and gather round the corpse and when the relations of the dead person come in begin crying like the banshee. These women shed no tears but these mournful sounds cause the real mourners to give full vent to their grief. To use an old saying "they would bring tears from a stone. " Many other customs at wakes exist.
    A plate of tobacco is passed round and pipes are supplied to all who wish to smoke. Drink is usually very plentiful and
