    Of patriotic John Twiss
    The bravest of the brave
    Whose body sleeps within the prison walls
    In an unhonoured grave

    The story is a sad one
    The heroic man struck down
    By the blood money and perjury
    Of a harsh relentless crown
    On the twenty-seventh of April
    They arrested this brave man
    And brought him to Newmarket
    Where his trial straight began

    They lost no opportunity
    To make him change his coat
    But he always answered proudly
