- Two Hedge Schools existed in this district. One was in Clonfert and the other was in the Convent. Kerry Horan was one of the teachers who taught there and the other was Pat Murphy from Meen-a-Tarbh.
They lodged in peoples houses in that district. They were paid with potatoes, meat, and farm produce. The subjects that were taught were Arithmetic, English, and writing. Irish was not spoken or encouraged. They wrote by means of pencil from the quarries. Every pupil had a slate to write on. They sat on stones. Blackbords were not known of at that time. Some teachers remained always in that district and others remained about six months in the districts.- Collector
