“In the days of the Famine...”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)Famine the Protestants of the Innishannon parish were supplied with food when they attended church.
One day a Catholic woman was on her way to Mass, carrying the usual offering of a penny for the church poor box. She met a Protestant neighbour. Seeing the penny, he asked her why she carried it. She replied that she had to pay a penny at the church door. He informed her that if she attended his church, she would not be required to pay anything but that she would be supplied with food instead.
The woman was indignant and this was her hasty reply; "I would prefer to pay a penny for salvation rather than get damnation for nothing. "- Bailitheoir
