  1. About eighty years ago and long before then little or nothing was known of oil or candles. Along the seaboard the people depended on the liver of skate for oil. Each family had in the hob a small iron vessel known in Irish as a (Sligí) Into these vessels they to pour the oil of the livers. They then had rushes for wicks. The odour of this oil was terrible bad but no gale would quench the light.
