- Long ago horse and pony races were held along the road from Neville's to Ballinagree. A great crowd used to collect to see them on St. Stephen's Day. In the evening when the races were over the people liked to honour St. Stephen by treating each other to a drink. Some of them took a little extra and they started a row. Then some person made these few verses which refer to this story written here and these are they.On St. Stephen's Day, with spirits gay and anxious for to see
The folks around who all were found to be in health and glee
I passed our town of high renown well known to you and me
For joy and mirth no spot on earth can equal BallinagreeThen after the races they added on another verse. Those who went to the races came home with sore faces
And no more about races at BallinagreeThis was the last of the horse and pony races at Ballinagree.- Bailitheoir
