    of the fort said, he would cut the trees down some day. The man kept saying this, until one day he took his saw, and cut all the trees in the fort. But alas he had not one bit of good luck the following year, and all his cattle died. He blamed himself for cutting the trees in the fort. As the old saying says, "When you are going on well in life never be too greedy". There is another story relating to my townland also.
    It happened a few centuries ago, that a famous highwayman named O' Hara, lay concealed in the caves of this place. He plundered and robbed, and was supposed to have a lot of money. But at last he was captured and put on trial in Carrick - on - Shannon. Like many other Highwaymen, he was sentenced to be hanged. This is supposed to have taken place on Gallow's hill in Carrick - on - Shannon.
    When about to mount the scaffold
    O' Hara asked for a certain person. But it seems this person was not among the audience. Then he addressed the whole assembly, and said, "that his wealth and whatever he had was hidden under a brackett stone in Lower Ballagh". He said these words in Irish, but there was a person there, who understood Irish, and so
