- The local houses in former times were all thatched. In most of the kitchen in these houses was a settle-bed, during the day it acted as a table. In some houses there were ones which were left on the floor and were used as seats. Fire places were always at the gable wall and the the front of the chimney was made of clay and stons. The poor people had no glass in the holes that served as windows but a bag was used instead. Most of the floors were made of yellow-clay. Half-doors were very common in this district.
