    cake and perhaps tea, which was generally concealed behind a joist of the house from the preceding year, and their dinner was usually bacon and white cabbage. Even the poorest cottage welcomed the festive season of Christmas with green decorations of ivy and holly; and the cheerful fire glanced through the lattice, inviting the strangers to raise the latch and join the gossip knot huddled round the hearth, spending the long evening with legendary jokes and oft told Christmas tales.
