  1. Once upon a time a man lived in Kilgarvan. He had twelve cows but in the Summer time he could not make butter, only a kind of froth.
At this time there was no market in Kilgarvan and the farmers used to go to Cork to sell their butter. This man was going to Cork with the butter one night. It was about twelve o'clock. He was not gone far when he met a man. The man asked him where he was going and he told him he was going to Cork but the butter he had was only froth.
The man told him to go home and put the sock of the plow in the fire and to make his churn then.
He went home and he did as he was told and while he was making the churn a woman came to the door and she was screeching that she was burning in hell. He went to the door and opened it and left her in. She told him that it was herself that used to take the butter and he made the churn and he made good butter ever afterwards.
