- Potatoes are grown on our farm. One Irish acer. My Father prepares the ground. The ground is manured before being turned up. The potatoes are sown in drills. The drills are made with a plough. Wooden ploughs were not used. The spades were brought in a shop. The potatoes must be cut for sowing. Local people help one another when sowing the potatoes. By giving one another horses, and men. To pluck the weeds from the drills, and to put earth up to them. In Autumn the potatoes are raised from the ground with two horses and a plough. Men are hired to pick the potatoes. Our potatoes are stored in a pit. A big heap of potatoes in the shaped of a drill is covered over by earth. Old champion, Up to Dates, Golden Wonders, Irish Queens. Irish Queens grow best in this district. Potatoes were not used instead of starch.
