- In olden days lots of people used to go around to houses selling small articles and looking for alms. Some of them used to visit my district very frequently. They used to sell articles of various types. The following are some of the goods they used to sell, matches, pins, needles and boot laces.
The following are the names of some of them; Peggy Spelman, Dick Noon and Mary Ward; also Stephen Woods and his brother Jimmie. Stephen Woods used to sell needles, pins, broaches, boot laces and sometimes buttons. In some houses he used to get potatoes and he would give some of the above mentioned articles in return. He never got any lodgings in any house in this district. He had a hut or a small tent in which he and his brother used to reside. They both are dead now and one of them got killed in Scotland.
